What Is a BLDC Hair Dryer Motor?

BLDC stands for "brushless direct current." It describes a motor design where the rotating part (the rotor) is turned using electronically switched magnetic fields, rather than physical carbon brushes making contact with a spinning commutator. The motor is still powered by direct current — the "brushless" part refers specifically to how that current gets delivered to make the motor spin.

Brushed vs. Brushless: The Structural Difference

In a traditional brushed motor, small carbon brushes physically touch a rotating commutator to reverse the direction of current at the right moments, which is what keeps the rotor spinning. Physical contact means physical wear — brushes are a wear part that degrades with use.

A brushless motor removes that physical contact entirely. Instead, a small electronic controller senses the rotor's position and switches current through the motor's coils electronically, at the right moments, to keep it turning. There's no brush touching a commutator, and nothing wearing down through that specific mechanism.

This is a structural description of how the two designs are built, not a claim about which dries hair faster or runs cooler — those outcomes depend on many additional factors beyond motor topology alone.

Why the Distinction Is Usually Cited

In general appliance engineering, motor designs without brush-commutator contact are commonly cited for two structural reasons: there's no brush wearing down over the motor's lifetime, and there's no sparking contact point generating electrical noise. This is general motor-engineering context, not a performance claim specific to any one hair dryer.
